Best Time to Visit the Pocono Mountains

July 22, 2024

The Poconos are a genuine four-season destination — but the right time to visit depends entirely on what your group wants out of the trip.

Unlike destinations that have one clear peak season, the Pocono Mountains reward visits across all four — the right timing just depends on what your group is after. Summer (June through August) is the classic choice for lake-focused groups: warm water for swimming, long days for boating, and the fullest activity calendar of the year across the region's lake towns.

Fall, particularly the first three weeks of October, is our recommendation for couples and smaller groups prioritizing scenery over activity — peak foliage transforms the mountain residences' views, and the cooler temperatures make hiking and outdoor dining genuinely pleasant rather than sweltering. It's also, notably, the shoulder season with the best value on larger residences.

Winter, from mid-December through early March, belongs to ski-focused groups. Jack Frost and Camelback both maintain strong snowmaking operations, so conditions stay reliable even in years with lighter natural snowfall, and the region's mountain residences lean into the season with fireplaces, hot tubs, and saunas that make the off-mountain hours just as appealing as the on-mountain ones.

Spring is the quiet season, and for groups who value that above all else, it's worth serious consideration. Rates are lowest, availability is highest even for our most in-demand residences, and the region's lakes and trails are considerably less crowded than summer weekends. The tradeoff is water temperature — most guests wait until at least June for swimming — but for a group focused on hiking, cooking, and simply being together, late April through May offers exceptional value.
