For Thrill Seekers: The Most Adrenaline-Fueled Activities in the Poconos

January 20, 2025

A mountain coaster, whitewater rapids, a 200-acre off-road park, tandem skydiving, and a NASCAR tri-oval — the Poconos hold more genuine adrenaline than their quiet-lake reputation lets on. Here's where to find it.

The Poconos' reputation is built on lake days and quiet mountain views, which makes it easy to miss how much real adrenaline is packed into the same twenty-mile radius. A mountain coaster and aerial ropes course at Camelback (with an independent second adventure park, Pocono TreeVentures, and its own 1,000-foot racing zip lines a short drive away), Lehigh River whitewater rapids in Jim Thorpe, a 200-acre guided off-road park in Mount Pocono, tandem skydiving out of Saylorsburg, and a 2.5-mile NASCAR tri-oval all sit within a short drive of our residences — with a sunrise hot air balloon flight on the calmer end of the spectrum for groups who want the adrenaline view without the adrenaline. Below are eight activities worth building a day around, organized by which of our destinations they're closest to.

Camelback Mountain Adventures

Adventure ParkSeasonal (Spring–Fall)Get Directions

A mountainside adventure park at Camelback Resort featuring aerial ropes courses, zip lines, and the Downhill Mountain Coaster, with rides suited to both thrill-seekers and first-timers. The Downhill Mountain Coaster, a self-controlled sled-style ride down the mountainside, is the single most popular attraction and works for a wide age range, while the aerial courses scale up from beginner platforms to genuinely challenging high-ropes routes. It's an easy half-day stop for a group with mixed appetites for adrenaline, since guests can pick and choose which attractions to try.

An independent aerial ropes and zip line park in East Stroudsburg with eight courses and more than 90 elements spanning beginner to expert, plus its own 1,000-foot dual racing zip lines reaching speeds up to 30 mph — a genuine alternative to Camelback's adventure park. The color-coded course system lets visitors self-select their comfort level and progress upward as they gain confidence, and the dual racing zip lines add a competitive element that works well for groups. Being independently owned rather than resort-affiliated, it tends to run a bit less crowded than the Camelback option.

Pocono Whitewater

Water SportsSeasonal (Spring–Fall)Get Directions

Guided whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River, with a family-friendly stretch of calmer rapids alongside more technical runs for experienced paddlers. Summer trips wrap up with a riverside barbecue and bonfire at the outfitter's Jim Thorpe base. Trip length and difficulty vary by season and release schedule, since much of the river's flow depends on scheduled dam releases upstream — the outfitter can match a group to the right trip based on experience level and how much whitewater everyone's up for.

Skirmish Paintball

Outdoor RecreationSeasonal (Weekends, Spring–Fall)Get Directions

Billed as the birthplace of paintball, this sprawling wooded property offers dozens of themed playing fields for groups, from wooded bunkers to mock village scenarios. The sheer number of distinct fields means a full-day group visit rarely repeats the same setting twice, and the site's history as the location of the first organized paintball game in 1981 gives it a genuine claim to the sport's origin. Equipment rental and package options make it easy for a group to show up without any gear of their own.

Pocono ATVs at Memorytown

Outdoor RecreationSeasonal (Spring–Fall)Get Directions

A 200-acre guided ATV and UTV off-roading park through wooded Pocono trails, with a full safety briefing and fitted helmet before every tour — open to first-timers as well as experienced riders. Guided tours mean no prior off-roading experience is required, and the mix of trail terrain keeps things interesting without requiring expert-level handling. Multi-passenger UTV options make it accessible to guests who'd rather ride along than drive, which helps when a group has a range of comfort levels with off-road vehicles.

Pegasus Skydive Center

SkydivingSeasonal (Spring–Fall)Get Directions

Tandem skydiving over the Poconos from a Saylorsburg drop zone — a verified second option in the area, useful for groups who want a backup date if the primary drop zone books up. First-time jumpers go tandem with a certified instructor, with a freefall from altitude before a several-minute parachute descent back over the Pocono countryside. Weather and wind conditions can affect scheduling, so groups planning a jump around a specific date should build in some flexibility.

Pocono Raceway

MotorsportsSeasonal (Race Weekends, May–July)Get Directions

A 2.5-mile tri-oval known as "The Tricky Triangle," hosting NASCAR Cup Series race weekends each summer alongside track tours and driving experiences on off-weekends. The track's unusual asymmetric layout, with three distinct turns of different radii and banking, is part of what makes it a favorite among drivers and fans alike, and race weekends bring a full festival atmosphere with camping, vendors, and concerts alongside the racing itself. Off-season track tours and ride-along experiences let non-race-weekend visitors get a taste of the track at speed.

Balloon Chase Adventures

Aerial TourYear-Round (Weather Permitting)Get Directions

Sunrise and sunset hot air balloon flights over the Pocono hills from a Moscow, PA launch site, with two- and four-passenger balloon options for a quieter kind of adrenaline than the ground-level activities nearby. Flights typically last about an hour in the air, drifting over the rolling ridgelines and lakes of the region with views unavailable from any trail or overlook, followed by a traditional champagne toast on landing. Weather dependency means flights sometimes need to be rescheduled, so it's worth booking with a flexible day or two around a planned flight.
